I Recall When I Played With My Chess Set

November 15, 2008

The item that I’ve possessed throughout my living and criss-crossed the land with, is a small electronic chess set. It works on two AA electric batteries and has eight distinct skill stages. Naturally after 43 years the whites are a tad rusty and I’ve lost a king along the way, however mostly and an exchange of electric batteries on occasion it has lasted with me since I was 15 years old.

The chess set has lived in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Alaska and New York. It weathered marriage and survived kids. It holds back patiently in a closet for me to find time for a game. Naturally I’ve never done it justice, only ever making to skill stage five and most of the time being sufficient at grade three or four, simply it has been a lasting friend. It’s difficult to trust a chess set could be constructed in 1972 and carry on until now, but it has and it’s still omnipresent waiting to play!

There are so many extraordinary and gorgeous chess sets in the united states, they can be a wonderful item to amass or to give as gifts. I have seen gorgeous chessmen in the bazaars of Isreal and Turkey and in the market places of India. They seem to be a international sensation. These moderately priced sets formed from wood, marble or other localized fabrics can be ravishing conversation chessmen or cosmetic elements, even if one does not play chess.

Additionally, you can find chess pieces that are designed after a smorgasbord of themes, from civil war chess sets comprising the North and South to those based on novels and movies, such as Lord of the Rings.

An ancient, better that vintage, chess set on the lower ledge of the wash room in my friends’ household in a broken rusty box is nothing value searchers would present to Antiques Roadshow for an estimate. However, this set of red and black chessmen, with the satisfying feel of even the pawns, is priceless.

In my past are memories of childhood, an aunt who died before I left grammar school, and hours discovering the game and competing with my smaller brother. Rather of growing into chess, I matured out of it, more distractions and little patience as I moved toward my mid life. This chess set raises precious remembering beyond the battered board and well eroded pawns.

I remember when I was a youth that my father would only on the rarest occasion get out the household chess set. I was invariably so charged to see the hinged marble box with the black and burn one inch checkers on it. This wasn’t your plain jane chess set, this was a totally wooden hand crafted set.

I can recall each and every chess pieces with extraordinary detail, the knights, so demanding and forceful. The rooks fastidiously even cylinders with the smallest details showing several hours of work. I still have that chess set, it’s lacking a few pieces now, but I still cannot wait to show it to my boys when they’re senior enough to appreciate it.
