Electric Guitar - Finger Exercises
September 18, 2008
If you practice often and for more than an hour at a time, you will be able to build up decent finger strength on your own. But if you’re looking to have stamina as well as finger strength fast, there are an endless number of exercises you can do to speed up the process. Most finger exercises are tough as well, which adds a second degree of practice. The following samples are exercises that sound terrible but yield great results if used actively. The purpose of these exercises is you help your mental and finger skills.
Scales
Practicing scales is the best way to gain finger strength. Simply start playing the major scale up and down at a relaxing speed. Make sure that when you’re playing notes, they are ringing through clean and there is no fret buzz. When you fret the string make sure you are pushing the string down between the frets and not directly above of them. When you move up a string don’t lift your finger off of the fret board more than you have to. After you are relaxed play a scale. Start playing it faster and faster. Do not play any faster than you feel comfortable. Play all the scales you know, major, minor, blues, whatever you know will work.
Staircase Exercise
This is a well-known John Petrucci riff that can take you a long way. This exercise can also be used on both acoustic and bass, maybe even more effectively because of their higher string gage. The shape used in the exercise is like a staircase that is inverted several times. Each time you play the shape once normally and once inverted, then you move it up one fret and continue. Make sure to keep your fingers on the fretboard as long as possible, and let the notes ring out the best you can. Keep the whole exercise flowing and moving. Start off slowly and pick up the speed gradually as you feel more comfortable. Don’t focus on making the shape and then playing, but start playing the shape before all of your fret fingers are all the way down. It’s the best way to keep everything flowing smoothly. This exercise will greatly help your fingers’ accuracy and speed.
Chromatic Exercises
Another great exercise is the chromatic scale, or any chromatics for that matter. Running up and down the chromatic scale can help speed, accuracy and of course finger strength. Do this often to keep your fingers synched up. And of course, if you have some favorite guitar solos with long eighth- or sixteenth-note runs, you can practice them over and over as well.

Proof That A Upright Piano Cover Can Come In All Shapes And Sizes
August 8, 2008
Over the years I have received some peculiar requests from people with request for making a upright piano cover that will becovering much more than pianos. The requests have been to cover either odd items or odd patterns to cover a grand piano. I have taken a few moments to list some of my favorites in the paragraphs that follow.
Dog House Cover. A woman in Illinios called and asked if we could make a custom fitted, waterproof cover that could fit the specifications of her dog house. She and her husband were having a discussion about the potential to keep their dog as an inside dog because of the damage the dog had done in recent weeks to their belongings when they were both at work during the day. The solution was to leave the dog outside all day but she was concerned about the winter weather (both cold and rain) and wanted us to make a cover that would enclose her dog house. We were able to talk her out of it and to get her to build out her dog house to one that is more weather appropriate and we did not hear back from them again.
Team Logos. We have lots of requests to put spin]professional|college[/spin]team logos on covers. We can put them on the front part of the cover, directly above the keys, we can make the grand piano cover with the logo on the side of the cover and we can place them in a more prominent setting directly on the top of the piano. The logo requests are not very hard to do because most of the time we can get pretty good artwork for the logos. The tricky part of the request is when people ask us to dye the cover to match the team colors. We have done them in Black and Red, Blue and Gold, Red and White and even Purple and Yellow. Dyeing a piano cover can be pretty expensive, but the piano covers did look terrific.
House Décor. Probably the most common reason for an unconventional upright piano cover is when the customer wants a piano cover to match the décor of a certain room in their house. These are the types of clients who tend to not have budget constraints so they are willing to pay a good deal of money to get what they are after. Some of the oddest have been pink and green colors, family plaid patterns, very cool designs for ultra modern music rooms and even requests to make a piano cover that will match the pattern of a couch or love seat.
We can meet particular needs but the customers need to remember that these custom piano covers take additional time and many times will cost five to eight times the cost of a traditional piano cover. Personally, I am partial to a traditional black or brown vinyl cover, but I have never been considered a trendy kind of guy.
High Quality Music Cabinets - What Does Quality Mean?
August 2, 2008
I recently had the privilege of traveling to spend an afternoon at the shop of the craftsman who make the higher end music cabinets, guitar stands and instrument display cases that our company represents. I was excited with what I witnessed when I walked through the shop. I had never really thought through what high quality meant in these pieces of furniture until I walked through the shop and listened to the craftsmen discuss how each piece is made. At a certain point in the conversation I stopped and asked what the word quality meant to the group. I loved the answers I received.
Finish. One craftsman told me that the way to judge whether a piece of furniture is high quality is to look at the finish. He told me that a piece of furniture that has any visible drops, pock marks, minor scratches, runs, or lacks consistency is one of the first signals to him that a piece of furniture was made by an assembly line and not by a craftsman. He went on to say that any piece that a person actually has made, from beginning to end, will have a high quality finish. He said that the finish is the first thing a person notices about a piece and an individual putting their name on it will not sacrifice anything when it comes to the finish – it is just not worth it to your reputation.
Wood. Another craftsman told me that the selection of the type of wood is very important to the quality of the music cabinet, not just for the time frame immediately following when it is completed, but for the piece to hold up for generations. He told me that many types of wood will expand and shrink with seasonal temperature changes, some types of wood will change dramatically during the course of a hot day and cool night. That expansion followed by rapid shrinking is what will cause pieces of furniture to become loose in the hinges and begin to wobble. The person or company making the wood simply did not use the right wood to allow the piece to hold up over time.
Fit. A Third craftsman told me that before the finish is applied he will take his pieces and test to see how sturdy the piece is by shaking it, pulling it, moving it by pushing on it from different angles and giving it a regular workout like it would have during the moving process as if a monkey was handling it (remember the old American Tourister ad with the monkey?). His rationale is that if the piece can survive that movement then it will be able to get to a destination safely and then will last a lifetime, if not longer. He also told me that the other item he is looking for is simply to be sure everything is smooth to the touch. He wants to be sure that joints fit tightly, dowels are snug and smooth to an open hand and that no corner should be left to have the feel of the cutting blade.
Function. The final craftsman I spoke with told me that a high quality piece of furniture will serve the purpose intended during the design process. Making each piece by hand allows the craftsman to develop with ways to make a piece better. They learn what works and what does not with every piece completed and their methods are refined with every unit made.
Quality is a wonderful thing. Selecting music cabinets of exceptional quality will allow the piece to become an heirloom for your family, passing from generation to generation.
