Do You Need A Chess Table?

June 17, 2009

The game of chess has long been a fixture in the realm of board games. So much so, that we have actual tables dedicated to our games of strategy so that they can easier remain a staple in our daily lives and homes.

Are you a novice or an experienced chess player?

Whether you are experienced or just learning, your game will be enhanced by using a beautiful chess table.

The majority of people will learn to play chess on a basic chess or checker board.

Once you have fallen in love with chess you will soon discover that you want to have your chess pieces readily available.Nothing fulfills this desire better than having your chess pieces ready and available on an actual chess table.

There are many different styles of chess tables. One could choose a table that is made for only chess or checkers. Many chess tables also offer some form of storage. This storage can be either a large compartment underneath the removable top or drawers with pull knobs.

If you are trying to match your chess table to your current decor there are many types of wood available. High quality chess tables are usually made from maple and walnut or mahogany and briarwood. Many of the tops are inlaid with genuine Italian Alabaster. The majority of chess tables will also have an inlaid mosaic border. I have found that the best quality chess table will come from Italy, handcrafted by Italian artisans. These tables will add beauty and class to any room regardless of the décor.

There are several different styles to choose from. There are chess tables that have one large pedestal as the base, or a smaller pedestal with 3 or 4 feet. If you like your furniture less “bulky” choose a table that has 4 thin legs with a storage shelf under the chess board.

When choosing a chess table make sure you consider the size of your chess pieces. The base of a chess piece can range from 1 1/8 inch to 2 3/4 inches. The squares on a chess table will range in size from 1 7/16 inch to 2 4/8 inches. Also note that the height of the table will range from 24 inches to 27 4/8 inches. The width will also vary from 16 inches to 26 inches. So regardless of the order that you purchase your chess equipment, just keep in mind that the chess pieces and the table do need to be compatible.

Remember that with a beautiful wooden chess table and a unique set of chessmen you will be bringing a touch of elegance and sophistication to your home that will last for many, many years.

I Recall When I Played With My Chess Set

November 15, 2008

The item that I’ve possessed throughout my living and criss-crossed the land with, is a small electronic chess set. It works on two AA electric batteries and has eight distinct skill stages. Naturally after 43 years the whites are a tad rusty and I’ve lost a king along the way, however mostly and an exchange of electric batteries on occasion it has lasted with me since I was 15 years old.

The chess set has lived in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Alaska and New York. It weathered marriage and survived kids. It holds back patiently in a closet for me to find time for a game. Naturally I’ve never done it justice, only ever making to skill stage five and most of the time being sufficient at grade three or four, simply it has been a lasting friend. It’s difficult to trust a chess set could be constructed in 1972 and carry on until now, but it has and it’s still omnipresent waiting to play!

There are so many extraordinary and gorgeous chess sets in the united states, they can be a wonderful item to amass or to give as gifts. I have seen gorgeous chessmen in the bazaars of Isreal and Turkey and in the market places of India. They seem to be a international sensation. These moderately priced sets formed from wood, marble or other localized fabrics can be ravishing conversation chessmen or cosmetic elements, even if one does not play chess.

Additionally, you can find chess pieces that are designed after a smorgasbord of themes, from civil war chess sets comprising the North and South to those based on novels and movies, such as Lord of the Rings.

An ancient, better that vintage, chess set on the lower ledge of the wash room in my friends’ household in a broken rusty box is nothing value searchers would present to Antiques Roadshow for an estimate. However, this set of red and black chessmen, with the satisfying feel of even the pawns, is priceless.

In my past are memories of childhood, an aunt who died before I left grammar school, and hours discovering the game and competing with my smaller brother. Rather of growing into chess, I matured out of it, more distractions and little patience as I moved toward my mid life. This chess set raises precious remembering beyond the battered board and well eroded pawns.

I remember when I was a youth that my father would only on the rarest occasion get out the household chess set. I was invariably so charged to see the hinged marble box with the black and burn one inch checkers on it. This wasn’t your plain jane chess set, this was a totally wooden hand crafted set.

I can recall each and every chess pieces with extraordinary detail, the knights, so demanding and forceful. The rooks fastidiously even cylinders with the smallest details showing several hours of work. I still have that chess set, it’s lacking a few pieces now, but I still cannot wait to show it to my boys when they’re senior enough to appreciate it.

Chess Sets Come In Many Forms And Varieties

November 5, 2008

On a rainy day when you cannot adventure outside, both youngsters and grownups grow disgruntled and bothered. Different inside games can come to the rescue to help everyone defeat the boredom. Of the umpteen board games from which you may prefer chess is one game which is enjoyed by kids and grownups likewise. You need to have a chess set to enjoy the game.

There is a wide variety of chess sets you can buy in the world of every material and sizing like wood, metal, plastic and stone. Usually, Chess is a game enjoyed by 2 participants.

Today suddenly I remembered a long forgotten promise. Don’t get me wrong, it is not myself who has forgot only my precious husband. He was going to buy me a Chess set. It was the most lovely chess set, that i discovered in the show window of an secondhand store. The board was created of a marble type material and its pieces were of silver and bronze. King, Queen, Rook, Knight, Bishop and Pawn, they all looked so realistic, included with crowns and swords. It was love at first view.

I fell in love with that chess set. Unfortunately we went outside of the city and forgot about it. But some day I will be sure that my husband keeps his promise and then I will narrate how I made him assure to buy me that particular chess set.

Chess sets can come in umpteen makes and varieties. Years ago I used to like to look at the chess sets that are available in a corner store in Center City, Philly. The chess sets were forms of art and were kept under a counter behind a glass. Every chess set displayed there had a contrasting idea. Nearly all sets were rather high-priced. The pieces were constructed of some extraordinary materials, and did not resemble the chess pieces I possessed in my old cheap plastic chess set.

Sometimes it appeared as if you would have experienced difficulty actually playing chess with a themed set, since it would have been hard to tell which men were which after you started to move them around the board. I was never for sure if the individuals who can afford to purchase those chess sets would actually have utilized them to play the game. However the different pieces and styles of chessboards were frequently lovely, and I would have liked to have been able to afford to buy one of them.

One of the neatest chess sets that I have ever saw was crafted by an artist that my younger brother lived with. It possessed a lovely wooden chess board and the pieces were of cast pewter. This was really a elegant set not only for the artistry but likewise for the theme of the chess set, which was like a scene from the Lord of the Rings motion picture, full-scale with medieval looking castles, elves, wizards, dragons and dwarfs.

The one set of pieces were electro copper plated, while the opponent pieces were the color of the pewter. I never got to play on it, but I did have the pleasure of putting it up at the art shows where my brother would try to sell their bosses work.

Is the public complicit in US torture?

October 15, 2008

How can we do our job as responsible citizens and government employees to support traditional moral codes?

Frank Rich compares us to "Good Germans" who ignored Nazi War crimes:

“America’s “enhanced interrogation” techniques have a grotesque provenance: “Verschärfte Vernehmung, enhanced or intensified interrogation, was the exact term innovated by the Gestapo to describe what became known as the ‘third degree.’ It left no marks. It included hypothermia, stress positions and long-time sleep deprivation.”

“We got more information out of a German general with a game of chess or Ping-Pong than they do today, with their torture,” said Henry Kolm, 90, an M.I.T. physicist whose interrogation of Rudolf Hess, Hitler’s deputy, took place over a chessboard. George Frenkel, 87, recalled that he “never laid hands on anyone” in his many interrogations, adding, “I’m proud to say I never compromised my humanity.”

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/14/opinion/14rich2.html?ref=opinion
The "Good Germans" explained after the war that they knew nothing about the extermination camps. Do you think they were in denial?

Are we in denial about what we knew?

The FBI made a report public on torture at Guantanemo Bay soon after it opened, and the Washington Post published the accounts on torture. There was no public uproar. Newspapers, political columnists and politicians were mute. Why?

Were we so stunned by the events of 9-11? Is this an excuse?

Some have been active and helpful and moral:

FBI Agents Allege Abuse of Detainees at Guantanamo Bay
By Dan Eggen and R. Jeffrey Smith Washington Post Staff Writers

Detainees at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, were shackled to the floor in fetal positions for more than 24 hours at a time, left without food and water, and allowed to defecate on themselves, an FBI agent who said he witnessed such abuse reported in a memo to supervisors, according to documents released yesterday.

Torture is something we should NEVER support. If you resort to any measure no matter how horrid or oppressive for the sake of 'freedom' then don't be suprised if you wake up one day and realise your country has morphed into a dictatorship and you supported that change.

There has always been terrorists and there always will be. As long as someone is an egocentric bully, and as long as another sees violence as an easy way to achieve results (thats what many of today's terrorists saw in the Afghanistan War.) Fight for freedom if you must, but you must be prepared to fight for it at home as well.

For those who say "its a measure in bad times," have you ever wondered when the bad times would stop? Would they suddenly just scrap all the draconian laws and say "all done, now you can be free!" The world doesn't work like that I'm afraid. Not to mention the War on Terrorism is INHERENTLY IMPOSSIBLE to win.

The USA is going down a road it doesn't want to go down, and if it continues it may be too late to turn back.

Are you a hypocrite voter?

October 11, 2008

Be honest! If you’re on the demo team, we all started out screaming for change yet Obama did choose a good old boy for the experience. If you’re a repub, you started out screaming that we go with experience and tradition yet McCain chose a non-traditional running mate with no experience.

Makes me feel like we have all been duped! The fact is that no matter what your candidate does, you’ll justify it. If Obama had a teenage pregnant daughter it would be the end for him, but since its Palin people will make excuses.

This is a game of chess, but the only problem is peoples real lives hang in the balance.

Are we choosing for a candidate for a better America or just to say “my candidate one!”

Take a good look at yourself before answering the question if you can’t be honest don’t answer! Thanks!
I don’t care who you vote for! This question isn’t about that. Its about are we as individuals sticking to our own morals or are we blindly following these candidates?

Are you voting for someone simply because they are demo/repub nothing else matters and there’s not flexibility to that decision? If so, then it really doesn’t matter who’s up there, what they do, what they say, how they care themselves, or what they believe.

The truth is, change never comes from politics it can only come from us and how can we change things if we can’t even be women/man enough to demand more of our “candidates”?

“change” to me never meant that Obama had to choose a ‘washington outsider’….it meant that Obama would need to choose a person that both balanced his ticket and is willing to go against Obama and get him to look at situations differently if need be. I want someone who will challenge Obama…not be a ‘yes man’ and I think we have that in Biden.

its not just crickett?its not honourable nor fair, merry xmass?

October 3, 2008

australia faces a test ,against its traditional enimy Briton
,just as with the sepperation of powers ,
hat lead to the colonials revolting in the evolution for U.S independance ,even today the colonials fight the brits in the noble game of cricket /crikey
but note
the game begins with a tosser up of coin ,thats right a coin toss ,a gamble each time
yet even in chess the winner has alternate choice ,a random choice ,to begin but then alternate choice
its a matter of honour
thus come the question
IS IT FAIR?
that as with crickett it is left to chance, should not honour be the normal course
why need christians hate christian,
fight for the ASHES
whats with this need to the wars of chance
this xmass as all xmasss will have the poms battle the ausies,
in stadium,s that are afforded while the worlds poor starve,
while the gays are cast lower that murderers,
while millions die of aids and drug wars continue,
while our world dies
while god weeps
recall jesus was born too

You are quite right………what is happening in the world is "just not cricket" all that you, and everyone else can do, is to is try and make a difference to another person's life for a better world. Good luck!

Australia WILL win this current ashes series, so you see it is not "CHANCE", we have a better team!!!

ITF Tae kwon do or judo?

October 1, 2008

well im moving soon and i was thinking about trying this TKD school there or a judo school

TKD school offer as well BJJ and boxing and they do works with a mma team call the ratpack and itf looks good puch to the face no chess gear look good

judo school is a traditional Judo school all gi work but they are very good the school team in going to France for a judo fight of something

i already do BJJ Karate and Kickboxing if i go to the tkd i can still work on my bjj if i go to the judo school my bjj can help me and i would like to try judo
Inukami WOW did you read what up there^^

ITF dose not were chess gear anyone who know tkd will no that.

well if he is teaching boxing as well hes most likey going to teach you how to punch to the face and they do teach bjj in the tkd school so if i want to continued BJJ i can

never thought id say it but….id go with the tkd school.

not because of the taekwondo of course. but everything else.

there isnt much judo could teach you that the tkd school couldnt.

judo is traditional and basically just throws…and a bit of grappling (ne waza)

bjj is basically judo with a ne waza emphasis.

id go to the tkd school and study every art they teach. judo and bjj are one and the same to me…just with a different emphasis.

again, the only thing i see you gaining from judo is a few throws. which im sure they can teach you at the tkd school as well. if not…you can always take a seminar or a couple private lessons at the judo school and learn some throws.

The American plan to install the forward edge of its antimissile shield in Poland and the Czech Republic has raised memories of the great cold war struggle over America’s decision to station medium-range nuclear missiles in Europe. Of course, back then the resistance was largely in the streets. This time most of the questioning is coming from within the governments of Germany and France.
We have argued before that the proposed missile defense is not a good idea. The technology is uncertain; the threat from Iran and North Korea might yet be averted diplomatically. And repeatedly provoking Russia will only make Russia more of a problem, we fear. The shield, moreover, is really intended as a defense of the United States (and Europe) by the United States, and so only deepens the perception of American arrogance and selfishness. The Bush administration, scornful of traditional diplomacy, has made it worse by not doing more to consult either its longtime allies or its rival Russia.
As ever, Europe has confused the situation further by its inability to agree on any position or speak with a single or even a few voices. (Part of the problem is that “Old Europe” clearly resents the desire of “New Europe” to make the Americans happy.) If the European Union really wants to have a say on this issue — and many others — it would do best to first sort out what it would say.
It should start by insisting that Washington seriously discuss what threats are out there — and what it sees as the best ways to defend against them. Europe needs to know that it is not being used as a pawn in some larger chess game between Washington and Iran. Europe should remind Washington of the dangers of riling up the Russians. The best defense is still a common defense

The writer is against the proposed missile defense, as shown when they state "We have argued before that the proposed missile defense is not a good idea."

The whole article seems to be based on opinion rather than fact, like "scornful of traditional diplomacy, has made it worse…", "Europe needs to know that it is not being used as a pawn"

Are we playing by Osama bin Ladens rules?

September 23, 2008

I can't stand OBL and would like nothing more than to see his head on a platter but let's face it. He's proven himself to be a worthy advesary and I for one don't underestimate him and would not want to play him in a game of chess. He knew that the events of 911 would force the United States to engage him militarily, so why did he continue? Because it is exactly what he wanted, a chance to take on the United States military. I have no doubt he suspected we wouldn't stop with Afghanistan but continue on to Iraq or Iran after our victory (?) in Afghanistan. The collatoral damage that has ensued has only strengthened his position and brought more Muslims to the cause of Jihad. He knew this would happen so why do we keep playing his game, his way? Isn't it time the leaders of this country start realizing they're being outfoxed and start using their imagination instead of sticking to traditional military tactics that obviously aren't working?

in a word, yes. your specific speculations are all over the map; but, let me offer one scenario to prove your point…the current government is spending billions in capital and thousands of lives to fight an enemy that numbers less than 10,000 (very optimistic estimate). obl and his team need only release a video or tape and our side, predictably, pursues its policies with renewed enthusiasm. more death, more destruction, more recruits to their cause (less to ours) and more capital draining.

i believe it was a centuries old Chinese warrior/poet who suggested one must use the enemies strengths against him, if one wishes to win at war. thus far…our side has done exactly the opposite.
