How should you deal with cables when mounting a television?
December 6, 2008
We got a flat panel LCD a few months ago and have recently been thinking of mounting it on the wall. How do most people deal with the massive amount of cables connected to the tv? We have a DVD player, DVR, and a Wii, plus power cables… Do most people just mount the TV above the old tv stand (this is where we organize our Wii etc).
I find it a little silly just to mount the TV above my TV stand that is around 3 feet deep.
If you have a TV stand, you might as well use it. Most people run the wires through their walls but that can be quite expensive.

How to protect electric lighting cables when hanging wallpaper?
November 22, 2008
We are hanging lining paper on the walls & ceiling and have reached the ceiling light and wall lights. Obviously we know we have to switch off the mains electricity to even attempt to dismantle the light fittings…but what do we do to the bare cables before we continue with the wallpapering? We have heard that they should be `capped off`…how?
We intend to replace new light fittings after all the wallpapering has been finished.
You can obtain electric wire caps at your local DIY centre. they are just short lengths of plastic tube, closed at one end. Buy sufficient for the job and insulating tape.
DO THE FOLLOWING IN DAYLIGHT!
Switch off your electrics at the consumer circuit breaker/fuse box.
Carefully dismantle the existing light fittings and remove. Place caps over the exposed cable ends and secure with insulating tape.
There is normally a recess in walls for the wall fitting cables. Push the exposed cables into the recess. If your walls are plasterboard covered studding, tie a length of string to the cables and fix the running end of the string to the wall, with a drawing pin. The push the cable back into the cavity.
Similary tie off a length of string to the ceiling connections, fix with a drawing pin and then push the cable up into the ceiling void.
Apply wall and ceiling coverning as normal.
After the covering adhesive has dried, locate the recess apertures and cut a cross-shaped incision into the paper, making sure the crosspoint of the incision is directly over the aperture.
Draw the cable out of the recess/void with the string.
You are now ready to fix your new fittings.

How come coax cable does not have the same picture quality as other television cables?
November 20, 2008
I honestly think all these different cables for HDTVs are just a ploy to make more money. Component better than S-Video. HDMI better than component. What a load of crap! Your HD-quality video comes into your house through a coax cable (usually). Suddenly you need special cables to run from your cable box to the TV?
I get the fact that the HD-signal coming into your house is digital, and the cable box deciphers the signal. But what I don't get is that now the high-quality signal can no longer be carried via coax from the box to the television. And these so-called digital televisions can't extract the high-quality video?
Simply put, why can't coax from a cable box to television carry the same high-quality signal that it first carried into the house?
You can use coax to carry signal from a HD Box, I've done it on more than one occasion when installing cable. Honestly you can't even notice that much of a difference between coax, Compenent, DVI and HDMI, Coax is used a lot when hanging High def tv's because of the distance from the box to the tv. Its hard to find the hdmi and compenent cables that will reach that far so you can use a coax and just get an adapter from any electronics store that will let you plug the coax into the compenent video plugs.

What cables to use to conect dvr to dvd recorder?
November 18, 2008
My DVR has no copy to device feature and only one video an audio output jack.I need to use a Y cable for the outputs on the DVR.Do I use composite or component cables?Wal mart had 3 different kinds and I wasnt shure wich one to use without degrading the picture on a HD TV.
For HDTV, you have to hook-up your TV with component cables. (assumming your DVR doesn't have an HDMI connector). Your DVDR won't have component connectors, you have to connect to the DVR using a composite cable. The sound outputs from the DVR have to be connected via Y adapters to both the DVDR and the TV.

How do they lay down telecommunication cables in the ocean?
November 8, 2008
I think telecommunication companies use large cables that are laid down in the ocean which allow for the communication over phone across the ocean between continents.
My question is, how is this done? Also, how do they know where in the ocean to drop the cable?
The depth of the ocean was recorded in the days of the sailing ships. The first transatlantic cable was laid using this information so it was not laid in very deep water
The ocean floor is well mapped now, both with sonar and from satellites.
A very large coil of cable is stored in the hold of a cable-laying ship and fed out over the stern. The ship is equipped with devices to relieve the tension on the cable as the ship moves with the waves to avoid snapping the cable.

What cables do I need to play a Sega Saturn?
November 4, 2008
What cables do I need (excluding controller and games) to plug in a Sega Saturn and play
Do i need extra cables for different types of TV’s?
Can you give me an online instruction manual?
Is there anything excluding cables I need to play it?
It has the red, yellow, white cables that plug in to the TV. But the one that plugs into the back of the Saturn is a different plug. I think it is a two prong plug that goes in the back. Then the end that goes in to the TV is the three colored prongs. I have one, but it is at my parents home. I will be out there on Thursday. If you don’t find what you need e-mail me, and I will let you know what it has that night. Just click on my photo, and it will take you to my page. You can e-mail me from there. You can check the Sega web site. I think it still has things on there for the saturn, and Dreamcast.

What cables attach to the battery for a Volkswagen Beetle?
November 2, 2008
There are three different cables that attach to the Volkswagen Beetle (1970) battery, with two to the positive terminal and one to the negative. Where do these cables attach from there? And what is the chassis to transmission strap?
The big red cable goes to the starter. The other goes to the regulator. The black cable goes to the floor pan. There is another cable (woven metal strap) under the car that connects the transmisson housing to the floor pan.

How necessary are HDMI gold tipped cables from the converter box to the HDTV?
October 17, 2008
Are the standard cables that Comcast supplies for their HDTV converter boxes good enough instead of investing in gold tipped cables? Which cables are best for quality and price?
The premium cable market is somewhat a scam and in most all cases, you will probably be fine without the high priced ones.

What size battery cables on a 1992 Ford Explorer?
October 15, 2008
I have a 1992 Ford Explorer 4WD Eddie Bauer edition. I need to replace the battery cables. I went to buy some and there were a lot of different lengths. What size do I need? Is this a hard thing to replace?
Red positive to the starter can fight.go to a automotive parts supplier ,Car-quest/Napa.
They will place in your hand just the ones you need for your ford.
"Not autozone/checker"don't forget the anti-corrision rings for the post and battery post sealer spray, fords tend to be bad about corrision. And the black ground also has a small wire grounded to the fender on this one.I think, disconnect black first reconnect last always.
make sure starter lead is not touching/rubbing sharp or hot parts.YOU CAN DO IT !!!

What high conductivity cables should I get to connect my guitar to my stereo?
October 11, 2008
I'm looking for cables with good quality and ones that reduce, if not terminate static noise.
By the way, I forgot to mention that I already have a distortion pedal, which works perfectly with headphones. It's only when i connect it to my system, that problems arise.
My system is SOny MHC GN999DS and I have a Zoom distortion pedal.
GuitarNuts.com has a great page on what to look for in cables depending on where they're being used.
