Cal Athletics in Beijing – Martin Maric and Amin Nikfar (Part 4)
December 15, 2008
Jigar Mehta, a UC Berkeley alum, is in Beijing and capturing a behind the scenes look of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Here are some of his notes that correspond to the video. For more updates and information, please visit http://calbears.com
——————————-
The Olympics are clearly underway here in Beijing — it’s all people are talking about. I’ve been on a mission to meet to as many Cal Olympians as I can while I am here, and maybe even get my photo taken with a Cal Olympian’s medal round my neck!
Since most of the Cal Bears are in the middle of competing, from swimming to softball, they don’t have the time (yet!) to talk to me. They are on the train-eat-sleep, repeat then compete routine.
However, I had a bit of good luck, meeting two Cal Olympians, Martin Maric (’09) and Amin Nikfar (’04), outside the Olympic Village, their home in Beijing.

Is it safe to partake in athletics such as football while on methamphetamine?
December 15, 2008
My friends is considering going to football pravtice about 30 minutes after smokin methamphetamines. Will this affect him any worse than just smoking it any other time?
Hi:
That’s a little too much for the heart to handle. Your friend is combining two things that put great strain on the heart… and he’ll probably collapse a half hour into practice. You should advise him against it. It’s not safe at all.

Do you think that professional athletics get paid TOO MUCH?
December 11, 2008
I think that athletics are getting paid too much just to play professional sports. What some athletics make in just one year some people make in their lifetime.
Yes. I think that it is an injustice to our society. The people that should be paid that much is our police officers, firemen & soldiers that fight for our country.

How do you feel about paying fees for art and athletics at public schools?
December 8, 2008
I am writing a story about school policies for a local paper. If you wouldn't mind being quoted please leave your first and last name so I can attribute your thoughts.
Thank you very much!
Here in Nevada everyone is facing budget crunches. we've had over 1 billion knocked off the top- and everyone has contributed including schools. What does that mean? The most "unnecessary" programs (usually seen as art, music, and maybe sports) will be the first things to go.
Asking people to pay for the sports and arts program can have benefits. One- they rely less on the funding the school gets for these programs and so will not be as severely impacted by budget cuts. In theory, the quality of the programs may be higher for this reason. Then, only those who wish to participate actually pay so no one else (tax-payer wise) has the burden of paying for programs they don't necessarily want or need.
The drawback- this would only work well in schools that service a relatively wealthy or at least "well to do" area of people. They can afford to pay for the programs, and would probably do so without too much fuss. However, even schools in wealthy areas have students whose families cannot afford to pay. And what of schools located in less affluent areas? Most of that student body would not have the opportunity to participate in sports, music, or art if they had to pay- making it even more likely they'll find other less constructive ways to occupy their time.
Overall, I don't think it's a bad idea *if* there is a way to ensure that it is still open and available to everyone- even those that cannot pay. Otherwise, I think such programs need to remain free to be "equal opportunity" since the benefits of being involved in art, music, and/or sports are just too valuable to place a dollar amount on.
And you can quote me!

What are the Athletics gonna be called now?
December 6, 2008
I've heard of the new Cisco field being made in Fremont, California. Its nice the A's are finally getting a stadium of there own, yet are they still gonna be recongized as Oakland anymore, or be called the Fremont A's? Which sounds strange to begin with.
i agree with the first answer, but when the marlins move they are the miami marlins.oakland will not change their name. they are too close to oakland, its like the los angeles angels of aneheim.it might be the oakland athletics of fremont
